UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge

UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge

Our Year 9, 10, and 11 students recently took part in the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Intermediate Maths Challenge on Tuesday 28 January 2026. The national competition is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and problem-solving skills through a series of engaging and thought-provoking questions.

The 60-minute challenge consisted of 25 multiple-choice questions that required students to apply a range of mathematical skills while thinking critically and logically. The competition is carefully designed to be accessible to a wide range of students while also stretching and challenging those with more advanced mathematical ability.

At Islamia Girls School, a total of 55 students participated in the challenge, demonstrating enthusiasm, commitment, and resilience in developing their mathematical understanding and confidence. In preparation for the competition, students worked diligently using past papers from the UKMT website and benefited from the guidance and support of Ms Begum, our Maths teacher.

Participating in the UKMT Challenge provided students with many valuable benefits beyond the classroom. The experience helped students strengthen their problem-solving abilities, develop perseverance when tackling unfamiliar questions, and improve their confidence in applying mathematical reasoning under timed conditions. Competitions such as these also encourage students to enjoy mathematics in a more investigative and creative way, while promoting resilience, independent thinking, and academic ambition.

We are extremely proud of all the students who took part, particularly as many participants were only a few marks away from achieving a Bronze award. Their hard work, determination, and willingness to challenge themselves should be highly commended.
