World Book Day at Islamia Girls School

World Book Day at Islamia Girls School

Pep and pageantry ensued at Islamia Girls School (IGS), with students and staff showing up for World Book Day as characters from much loved books.

With World Book Day falling in the blessed month of Ramadan this year, we decided to celebrate early on February 11th, to avoid it clashing with our Ramadan devotions.

It was an opportunity for everyone to showcase their creativity with the costumes they made, and this year our imagination really was the limit! There were superheroes, fairy tale characters, Disney characters and even some current affairs personalities which inspired a lot of chuckles.

To mark the occasion, we had a whole-school assembly, during which groups introduced their characters. Later, each class took part in a World Book Day quiz, testing their trivia knowledge about the world of literature.

We wrapped up the day with a Teachers vs Students quiz for the whole school, which was followed by a ceremony where prizes were awarded for the best costumes and to quiz winners.

World Book Day is designed to foster interest in books and encourages students to read for pleasure, helping them build strong literacy skills, while enriching their vocabulary and imagination. Developing a reading habit can also improve academic performance across all subjects.

As an Islamic all-girls school, we believe it’s important for our students to explore stories with strong female protagonists as well as inspiring real-life role models. We hope that parents will encourage their girls to read about confident, resilient and successful women, particularly from the Muslim world and Islamic history, which will boost their self-belief and ambition.
