With just £10 start-up capital, Year 9 students launched and ran their own mini businesses as part of the Young Enterprise 10x Challenge.
Year 9 students at Islamia Girls School (IGS) have been working on their Business Enterprise Projects, these past 6 weeks, for the 10x Challenge. This initiative is organised by Young Enterprise, the UK’s leading charity for enterprise and financial education, which helps young people develop vital skills for life and work.
Their challenge was to pledge £10 as start-up capital to launch a business over the course of 6 weeks and try to make themselves some profit. During this time, students worked in teams to develop product ideas. They sourced and created their carefully thought-out products. And then they set up stalls as part of their business, hoping to get themselves a higher profit margin and increased customer interest.
Stalls ranged from mini beauty stalls, jewellery stalls, food stalls and some with a variety of products on offer. Boasting some enticing displays, they were open for business over the course of two days and were operating during breaks.
Customers were spoilt for choice for products like hair accessories, sweet treats, milkshake (freshly made), cake pops, handmade key chains, beauty products (like eye masks and castor oil), and mystery bags. There was even a burger stall!
Over the course of two days, participating students made a pretty profit from their stalls, making it hard to believe they all started with a capital of just £10 per student.
Well done to all our Year 9 students, who gained first-hand experience in the sweet success of running a small business enterprise, while enhancing their teamwork and organisational skills. We are very proud of our young entrepreneurs and could see how much they enjoyed the experience.
