On 16th June, our school held its annual Youth First Aid Workshop for students in Years 7, 8, and 9, with the support of the Red Cross and first aid trainer, Suzan Palker.
Each year group participated in a one-hour training session designed to equip students with essential first aid knowledge and practical life-saving skills. During the workshop, students learned what first aid is, who may need it, and the correct procedures to follow when providing assistance. They also discussed a range of real-life scenarios and explored how they could respond safely and effectively in emergency situations.
A key part of the training involved learning and practising the recovery position, an important skill used to help someone who is unconscious but breathing normally. Students were able to demonstrate this technique with confidence under expert guidance.
In addition, Years 8 and 9 received training in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Using Annie training manikins, students practised chest compressions and learned how to respond in a cardiac emergency.
The benefits of this workshop are significant. It helps students develop confidence, responsibility, and the practical skills needed to assist others in an emergency. By learning first aid, our students become better prepared to act quickly and potentially save lives.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Suzan Palker for delivering such an engaging and informative workshop. Suzan was incredibly patient, taking the time to answer students’ questions and ensure that everyone understood the techniques being taught. A special thank you goes to our Year 7 students, for whom this was their first experience of first aid training. Suzan’s encouragement and expertise helped make the experience enjoyable, memorable, and highly educational.
We are also grateful to the Red Cross for their continued support in helping our students gain these invaluable life skills.
