History at Islamia

"Have they not travelled through the land and
seen what was the end of those before them -
though they were superior to them inpower"

(Qur'an 30: 9)

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

It is the duty of the History department to try to realize the Qur’anic verse above. This is by giving pupils the opportunity to observe past nations and analyse their fall. From the Romans to the USSR the pupils at Islamia will learn about why History is important, what is good about the past and what we must learn from the past in order to achieve a successful future.

Thus the aim and objective of History at Islamia is to provide pupils with a clear understanding and knowledge of the past and present and how it affects the world today. Pupils will have the unique opportunity to look at events that are affecting the Muslim world today namely the conflict in the Middle East. This will be by observing the roots of these issues and possible solutions that can help solve the crisis in the Middle East.

understanding what
happened in the past and the
reasons for events."

KEY STAGE 4 HISTORY
History at GCSE is a new subject which was introduced in 2006 and this year the GCSE History examination will be taken for the first time in June 2008.

The course at Islamia follows the Edexcel GCSE in History (1334) ‘Modern World and European History’ which allows the adoption of a distinct and varied approach to the subject. It also provides students with the opportunity to study on a variety of scales and across a range of perspectives.

The chronology of the specification runs from the late nineteenth century to the modern day and aims to give students a clear understanding of the key issues which have helped to shape the modern world. These are:

Two outline studies:

  • Superpower Relations, 1945-90
  • Conflict and the Quest for Peace in the Middle East, 1948-95

Two depth studies:

  • The End of Apartheid in South Africa, 1982-94
  • Conflict in Vietnam, c1963-75

Coursework units:

  • The Changing Role and Status of Women since 1945
  • The Creation of the Welfare State: Britain in the 1940s

ASSESSMENT
The subject is assessed through the GCSE examinations taken at the end of Year 11, which constitute 75% of the final grade and cover the outline studies and depth studies. The remaining 25% comes from coursework assignments.
